For Ages, herbalists and botanists have been talking about the healing power of plants. Today, women all over the world believe in simple herbal remedies for the enhancement of youth and beauty, not just because it is economical, but because there is no need to worry about harsh chemicals which can damage the skin.

Over a period of time, many home remedies have proven to be effective and natural, therefore healthy! Making your own beauty products costs a fraction of what you pay for over-the-counter preparations. Keep in mind any allergies or sensitivity you may have to some ingredients like glycerin, lemons, eggs etc. Check with your doctor or dermatologist if you are not sure about using certain ingredients. Also when trying any skin preparations below, test out a small amount on your face (e.g. forehead area only) and in 24 hours check for any allergic reaction such as itching or any new rash on that particular area. You should then discontinue use.

Here are ten helpful beauty tips to make you look and feel your best. Most ingredients can be found in your own garden/backyard too:

1) To get rid of age spots and black spots on the skin, use a combination of aloe vera gel and papaya (pawpaw). Heat the pawpaw in a pot to dry out the water and then blend it with the aloe vera gel, vitamin E oil, olive oil and lavender oil to make a paste. Then use as a body cream and/or face cream to get rid of skin imperfections.
2) For firm glowing skin, pawpaw is a natural skin exfoliator which helps to smooth your complexion. A pawpaw mask leaves your skin glowing as the fruit enzymes are great for sloughing off dead skin cells. You can either eat it or use the juice as a paste, applying directly to your face.
3) Reduce split ends and keep hair black with 'RATCHET.' Ratchet is typically found in the Caribbean Region and is a plant which promotes hair growth and keeps it from dropping out. It also reverses greys, keeps hair black and reduces split ends. The juice from the leaf can be applied directly to the roots and ends of hair. Massage scalp thoroughly in a circular motion and work your way down to the ends. A mixture of ratchet, vitamin E oil and sea water thickens hair and makes it grow long and healthy.
4) You can remove dead cells with 'CARAILI.' Caraili is very popular in the Caribbean for its health benefits. Caraili juice mixed with turmeric (hardi) root, olive oil and pawpaw seeds can be used to make an excellent exfoliating cream. Everything should be blended so that the seeds will be moistened with the juices. Once blended, the paste can be used throughout the body, such as on hands, feet or any other part of the body where dead cells are forming.
5) Reduce open pores on the face with a mixture of tomatoes and avocado. It is the best remedy for open pores on the face. Tomatoes alone can be used in the absence of avocadoes. Store in the refrigerator until cold and simply crush with your hand and apply the juice to your face. Leave it on overnight and when you awake, your skin will appear smoother and softer.
6) You can achieve smooth skin by mashing a banana along with milk and then applying on your face. Wash it off after 20 minutes. This makes the skin smooth and supple.
7) To help reduce wrinkles, blend an egg white and some honey and then apply on your face. This makes your face very smooth and diminishes fine lines.
8) To remove a tan and help to reduce facial hair, blend turmeric powder with milk and apply on the face. Scrub it off with a good face scrub after about 15 minutes and then wash with cold water. You can also keep it overnight and then wash it off in the morning.
9) By applying raw sliced potatoes on your face, you can reduce blemishes and other scars too.
10) Cucumber juice is an excellent astringent. Applying cucumber juice on the face tightens the pores. Wash it off after 15 minutes with cold water.
